What is hydroplaning?

Hydroplaning occurs when a vehicle's tires lose contact with the road surface due to water on the roadway. This phenomenon typically happens when there is a significant amount of water, such as during heavy rain or flooding, and the vehicle's speed is high enough that the tires can no longer displace the water effectively. As a result, the tires ride on top of the water instead of maintaining firm contact with the pavement, leading to a loss of control.

Recognizing that hydroplaning can impair steering, braking, and acceleration is crucial for maintaining safe driving conditions, particularly in wet weather. Driving at slower speeds and ensuring that tires are properly inflated and have good tread depth can help reduce the risk of hydroplaning.
